India has firmly rejected claims made by US President Donald Trump that trade played a pivotal role in truce talks with Pakistan. While the US President has claimed that “nobody uses trade like him,” New Delhi has said that there was no reference of business during the talks. Sources told CNBC-TV18 that on multiple occasions, when the US officials reached out to New Delhi, there was no mention of trade.
The statement comes days after the US President told the media that he used trade to pull back both nuclear-armed neighbours from the brink of war.
“If you stop it, we’re doing trade. If you don’t stop it, we’re not going to do any trade. People have never really used trade the way I’ve used it, but that I can tell you,” Trump had said in his statement.
Sources say that US Vice-President JD Vance had reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 9. Subsequently, Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on May 8 and May 10. He has also spoken to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on May 10. On all these occasions, none of the discussions featured trade as a key point, sources added.
PM Modi, in his address to the nation on May 12, had said that India has temporarily halted the military operation against terrorism and India will not pay heed to any kind of nuclear blackmail.
