The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday carried out searches at a dozen locations in Chandigarh, Punjab and Delhi in connection with an alleged drug smuggling and fake passport scandal.
Those amongst raided include former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira.
In 2017, Khaira was elected to the State Assembly on the ticket of AAP. In 2019, he had quit the party and launched his own party Punjab Ekta Party (PEP). Khaira is an MLA from Bhulath in Kapurthala district, Punjab.
As per available information nearly ten individuals are under the scanner of the agency. Some of these are already lodged in jail in connection with drug trafficking, said people in the know.
The agency is investigating alleged laundering of money by the suspects under the relevant provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA)
