Corona Live: After brief respite, India witnesses sharp single-day spike again, reports over 3,000 cases today

Coronavirus Pandemic May 4 News: The Indian SARS-CoV2 Genomics Sequencing Consortium or INSACOG has finally confirmed the presence of Omicron strain – XE variant – in India. Weeks after both Maharashtra and Gujarat reported about the highly viral strain, INSACOG analysis says that one of the cases reported is that of XE variant. While the INSACOG bulletin didn’t specify which state has the XE variant case, the officials had previously rejected Maharashtra’s report on the Omicron’s sub-variant. Officials, however, say that there is no need to panic. The XE variant of Omicron is said to be 10 per cent more transmissible than the BA.2 strain of Omicron, which is the dominant strain across the world at the moment. An Indian Express report quoted a government official saying that very few recombinant variants have been recognised in India so far and there are no reports of any Covid cluster due to such recombinant strains.

The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh reached 10,41,540 on Tuesday after the detection of 23 cases, while the death toll remained unchanged at 10,735, an official said.

The positivity rate stood at 0.4 per cent, while the recovery count increased by 13 to touch 10,30,602, leaving the state with 203 active cases, the official informed.

With 5,330 samples examined during the day, the number of tests in MP went up to 2,91,04,621, he added.

A government release said 11,78,47,475 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far in the state, including 3,549 on Tuesday.

Coronavirus figures in MP are as follows: Total cases 10,41,540, new cases 26, death toll 10,735, recoveries 10,30,602, active cases 203, number of tests so far 2,91,04,621.

A day after its Covid shot Covovax was included on the CoWIN portal for inoculation of children aged 12-17 years at private vaccination centres, the Serum Institute of India (SII) on Tuesday reduced the price of each dose of the vaccine from Rs 900 to Rs 225, excluding taxes. Following recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI) the provision of the vaccine option was included on the portal on Monday. On Tuesday, Director for Government and Regulatory Affairs, SII, Prakash Kumar Singh, is learnt to have communicated to the government that the firm is reducing the price of each dose from Rs 900 to Rs 225 plus goods and services tax (GST) for private hospitals. In addition, a private hospital can charge up to Rs 150 as service charge.
