Paytm block deal: 2.95% equity worth Rs 2,949 crore changes hands; promoter entity was reported likely seller

About 1.92 crore shares of One97 Communications Ltd, the parent company of Paytm, changed hands in a block deal on Tuesday, August 18, representing 2.95 percent of the fintech company's equity. The transaction was valued at an aggregate Rs 2,949 crore.

While the identities of the buyers and sellers were not immediately disclosed, CNBC-TV18 had reported on Monday, citing unidentified sources, that Resilient Asset Management B.V., the parent and promoter entity of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, was looking to sell a stake in the company through a block deal.

The block deal was executed at Rs 1,535.1 per share, same as the floor price cited in Monday's report. That floor price represented a 2.9 percent discount to Paytm's Monday closing price of Rs 1,580.2 on the NSE.

The report had said Resilient Asset Management was looking to sell up to 4.98 percent equity, comprising a base offer of 3 percent and an upsize option of another 1.98 percent. It had also indicated a 90-day lock-up on any further sale of shares.

The 2.95 percent stake that changed hands on Tuesday is therefore broadly in line with the 3 percent base offer size reported a day earlier, although the transaction data available so far does not identify Resilient Asset Management as the seller.

Paytm shares had closed 1.42 percent lower at Rs 1,580.20 on Monday. The stock has gained 22.3 percent so far in 2026, outperforming the Nifty 50, which has fallen 7.1 percent over the same period. One97 Communications had a market capitalisation of more than Rs 1.01 lakh crore at Monday's close.

Earlier this month, Paytm reported a 79 percent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 220 crore for the June quarter, compared with Rs 123 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose 28 percent to Rs 2,448 crore from Rs 1,918 crore. The company's payments business also recorded growth during the quarter, with merchant gross merchandise value rising 31 percent year-on-year to Rs 7.1 lakh crore. Customer UPI gross transaction value increased 45 percent to Rs 5.9 lakh crore.
