The monsoon winds usually begin their retreat from the Indian subcontinent from western Rajasthan around September 17. While already a week behind schedule, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the retreat is not likely to begin before the first week of October, marking a delay of nearly three weeks.
Monsoon rainfall, which has been tumultuous for much of this season, will persist for at least 10 days more before the weather system starts its withdrawal over the country, the weather bureau said.
This will bring respite to the farming sector where activity had been lagging due to inadequate rains in most regions. Rains picked up pace only in September.
Farmers have struggled with an erratic monsoon season this year. While the season got off to a blistering start in June with excess rainfall ( 10%), both July (-7%) and August (-24%) saw large deficits.
