Kremlin delinks nuclear weapon usage from Kyiv crisis; Abramovich’s suspected poisoning sparks outrage: Top Updates

Russia Ukraine War March 29 Latest News: As the so-called ‘special military operations’ launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin drags on in Ukraine, negotiators from both sides would meet for the first time face-to-face in a meeting in Turkey’s Istanbul today. Global markets have heaved a sigh of relief ahead of the talks. However, Ukraine is not very hopeful of any positive outcomes since there is no let-up in the bombardment by Russian troops. In a related development, some reports suggest that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and some peace negotiators had shown symptoms of poisoning earlier this month. While Abramovich has recovered, no official statement has been issued so far. As the world watches the crisis unfold, here are latest developments on Russia-Ukraine War that you should know:

Members of both Russian and Ukrainian peace delegations have arrived for the talks in Istanbul today. This is the first time that officials from both sides are meeting face-to-face in two weeks. Kyiv says that the main agenda of the meeting would be to convince the Russians for an immediate ceasefire.

In what can be termed as a climbdown ahead of the peace talks, Kremlin has tried to downplay the nuclear weapon usage stance. In an interview to PBS Newshour, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia using nuclear weapon is not related to the ‘outcome of the ongoing operations in Ukraine.’ He said that Moscow would only press the nuclear button in the event of ‘threat for existence of the state.’

The US officials, meanwhile, have denied the Wall Street Journal’s report of Abramovich’s alleged poisoning. A Reuters report quoted a US security official saying that the American intelligence suggest that the symptoms were linked to ‘environment’ factor and not poison.

In terms of on-ground battles, Ukraine claims that it has taken back the control of Irpin. Trostyanets is another area that is back with Ukraine, local officials claim. Several exit routes from major cities across Ukraine have been blocked by the Russian troops.

US President Joe Biden has once again said that his off-the-cuff remark in Poland was a ‘moral outrage’ against Russia and doesn’t signal any policy shift of the United States. Locals living near Chernobyl nuclear site claims that Russian soldiers have been driving armoured vehicles through a highly toxic zone called the “Red Forest”. The Russian troops are going around without radiation protection, workers were quoted as saying by Reuters.
