Helmet maker Studds shares soar 15?ter new govt takes charge in West Bengal: Here's why

Shares of Studds Accessories surged in Tuesday's trade after a report highlighted a sharp rise in helmet demand in West Bengal following stricter enforcement of traffic safety rules after the recent Assembly elections.

Studds Accessories shares were trading at Rs 495 on the NSE, up 12.68 percent. Earlier in the session, the stock had rallied as much as 14.50 percent to an intraday high.

The rally comes after The Economic Times reported that Studds Accessories, one of India's largest helmet manufacturers, recorded a 70 percent jump in sales volumes in West Bengal during May.

The report attributed the surge to intensified action against helmet-rule violations across the state following the election outcome.

Citing company sales data, ET reported that sales of children's helmets more than doubled during the month, indicating broader adoption of safety gear among families. The report noted that the figures represent primary sales from the manufacturer to dealers.

"These are the areas where people never or rarely wore helmets, and where enforcement has now become more consistent," Aditya Verma, General Manager (Sales and Marketing) at Studds Accessories, told ET. "The surge in children's helmets suggests compliance is extending beyond individual riders to entire families," he was quoted as saying.

According to ET, demand that was previously concentrated in Kolkata has now spread to Tier-II cities and towns including Murshidabad, Malda, Medinipur, Krishnanagar, Asansol, Burdwan, Bankura, Siliguri and Jalpaiguri.

The Economic Times also reported that distributors of another helmet manufacturer, Vega Helmets, have seen sales volumes rise about 30 percent since May, driven largely by demand from smaller towns and semi-urban markets. Several helmet retailers in Kolkata told ET that sales growth accelerated to 40-60 percent in May, compared with the earlier trend of 8-9 percent.

As per police data cited by ET, more than 35,600 challans for riding without helmets were issued in Kolkata during May. Officials estimated that the number of prosecutions across the state could be more than double that figure.

State minister Ashok Kirtania told ET that police have been instructed to act against all helmet-rule violators, with an exemption only for Sikhs on religious grounds. "This is an outcome of the government's focus on people's safety… We believe in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'sab ka sath, sab ka vikas' and also 'sab ka suraksha'," he told ET.

Senior police officials also told ET that enforcement has been stepped up across West Bengal, with some districts even deploying officers dressed as 'Yama' to promote road safety awareness and improve compliance.
